Highlights from the September Friends’ meeting.

Hello, Friends!

Thank you to those who made it out on Tuesday evening. Quite a few of you couldn’t make it, and we missed you all!

We heard from Assistant City Manager Roque Salinas himself about the status and timeline of the Library restoration project to kick off the meeting. Here is a brief overview and I’ll be happy to share a longer one with anyone interested-

  • Exterior painting is underway, done in about 3-4 weeks (week of the 21st-25th).
  • Interior work (painting, stucco repair, and some ceiling tile replacement) follows.
  • The library will close for 3 days starting Monday, September 14, for staff development. It reopens the 18th, but the 2nd and 3rd floors stay closed for about three weeks while elevator work continues.
  • Target: painting and elevator work done in October, well before the holidays.
  • On Wednesday, the city planned to ask the historical commission about a new library roof (to replace the aging concrete-tile roof and prevent leaks), a new roof over the children’s area awning, and new exterior lighting for the building. No update yet.

Our meeting progressed as usual after Mr. Salinas answered a few questions and said goodbye. We heard from Courtney about her success in drumming up interest in Friends at August’s First Friday, and even had someone new join us from her efforts! Hopefully we will see more new faces in the future.

We heard financial, event, and general library updates, as well.

I hope everyone has had a great end to their summer, even if we do still have summer weather. We’ll see everyone who can make it on November 10 at 6p – it’ll be a great time to see the library restorations if you haven’t by then. As always, please reach out with any questions, or just to say hello.

Warmly,

Meghan Beisel -Chair
